I spent a full semester planning all of my assignments so that they could be done on the computer or on paper. I ended up using more paper last semester than ever before. Second, monitoring the kids takes more class time than teaching the lesson. All teachers have a different way of monitoring it, and many have simply become complacent. So when I go to take the computer for the day, it distracts the whole class and the kid makes a scene. Technology repairs are an issue, especially for the kids who refuse to pay the fee to get the computers back. Others simply don't follow up and have no idea that the computer is ready.","dateCreated":"1301512541","smartDate":"Mar 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Mrs_OlsenNVHS","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mrs_OlsenNVHS","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"36829090","body":"I think that all rising Freshmen should take a course in the 8th grade that teaches them how to use laptops effectively and efficiently. It should teach them certain things such as: how to make a folder, how to send an email, how to determine what is a valuable site and what is not, how to type, how to use microsoft word, how to use the computers as a resource and not a distraction. We need a better way to monitor their laptop use. It is my understanding that the only reason for helping students with 21st century learning is to help them learn, build upon prior knowledge, and multitask in the Digital Age. We are essentially helping foster future thinkers, leaders, and viable investors in our economy, so we must do it appropriately. Students who are not ready, academically or otherwise, should at least be trained on using the laptops for academic purposes only while in the classroom. Each student is preparing for the world outside the classroom and it\u2019s not always necessary to have technology at the finger tips of youth if he or she isn\u2019t ready for it. bolado","dateCreated":"1301512716","smartDate":"Mar 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"psantiva","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/psantiva","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"36829228","body":"Many of my students do not have working laptops and those who do often are on sites that do not relate to our lesson. The workshops need to be subject specific so that teachers that may be struggling with the use of technology can "see" the benefits of technology as we prepare students for the 21st century. Ultimately the aim should be to have a 21st century classroom.
\n
\nOne must remember that the national technology plan stesses the need to prepare students for use of technology in the 21st century. As a school, how can teachers do that if they themselves in some cases are not able to use technology? Again, subject specific workshops that show hands on use is the way to go as we are now doing for Staff Development today and to an extent Wired Wednesday.","dateCreated":"1301512920","smartDate":"Mar 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"KBNVHS","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/KBNVHS","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"36829414","body":"That post is by Ms. Bourne. When I need them to focus on what I am introducing or re-teaching, I have to have them shutdown their laptops or they will not listen, focus, concentrate, and follow along while I use my laptop and projector or we discuss face-to-face. Some problems that I have run into while we are using the laptops that stop learning is the free access to Facebook and other non-academic sites. Since I have my desks set up in front-facing rows, I can police the laptop screens when I stand in the back and scan the screens; unfortunately, as soon as I go to work with a student or group, the students return to the inappropriate sites and their working stops. When using the laptops, I find the students must have a very specific task that is set up and timed; they do not have the academic discipline to work cooperatively or creatively, like researching topics and incorporating their gathered information into a project presentation. Staff development on short, 1:1 assignments and on ways to turn these short assignments in to a culminative or summative project would be helpful. Also, monitoring software and strict enforcement would quickly turn around these students to use their laptops in the appropriate academic way. I would love to be able to use our laptops all the time.","dateCreated":"1301514272","smartDate":"Mar 30, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Ms.Register","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Ms.Register","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"37627716","body":"Thanks to all teachers for feedback.
